Dr. Harold Kelly Martin, Jr. was born to JoAn Watson Martin and Harold Kelly Martin on July 26, 1954, in Baytown, Texas. His intelligence and versatility shone through even at a young age. Members of his family and friends remembered him for his lively personality, sharp intellect, and renown musical talent and creativity. Dr. Martin completed his education at Abilene Christian University and Ross Sterling High School.

He then went on to Princeton Theological Seminary for a Master of Divinity and Yale University for a PhD. He had an impressive academic career that took him from Rhodes College to Duke University and back to Yale University, where he was a renowned professor for nineteen years.
